According to the Village of Mundelein's 2025 Water Quality Report, Mundelein receives its municipal drinking water from the Central Lake County Joint Action Water Agency (CLCJAWA). Lake Michigan is CLCJAWA's sole source of water.
The water is pumped from Lake Michigan and treated at CLCJAWA's Paul M. Neal Water Treatment Facility in Lake Bluff. The treatment process described in the report begins with ozone to kill organisms and break down contaminants. A coagulant is then added to assist with removal of sediment and particles. Water passes through activated carbon and fine sand filtration, followed by ultraviolet light treatment. Finally, chlorine is added to maintain protection through the distribution system, fluoride is added, and phosphate is used for corrosion control involving metals such as lead and copper.
CLCJAWA operates more than 50 miles of transmission water main to deliver treated water to participating communities. Mundelein then stores, pumps, and distributes that water through its own municipal system to more than 11,500 metered customers. The report states that the Village maintains more than 117 miles of water main, approximately 1,800 fire hydrants, and 1,700 valves.
