The City of Chicago Department of Water Management supplies municipal drinking water from Lake Michigan. According to Chicago’s 2025 Water Quality Report, water is drawn from Lake Michigan through offshore water cribs and sent to one of two purification facilities: the Jardine Water Purification Plant, which serves northern portions of Chicago and surrounding suburbs, and the Sawyer Water Purification Plant, which serves southern portions of Chicago and surrounding suburbs. After treatment, the water enters Chicago’s distribution and pumping network for delivery to customers.

Chicago’s 2025 Water Quality Report lists the reported regulated water-quality measurements as passing their applicable limits or treatment requirements. For example, the report lists total trihalomethanes at 26.4 ppb against an 80 ppb maximum contaminant level, haloacetic acids at 13.8 ppb against a 60 ppb maximum contaminant level, and the highest single turbidity measurement at 0.29 NTU. The report also says required total-organic-carbon removal requirements were met.
Lead and copper are regulated differently from contaminants with traditional maximum contaminant levels. Chicago reported lead 90th-percentile results ranging from 8.2 to 9.4 ppb during its 2025 monitoring periods, below the 15 ppb Lead and Copper Rule action level, although five individual sampling sites exceeded the action level. Copper 90th-percentile results ranged from 0.52 to 0.77 ppm, below the 1.3 ppm action level, with no sites reported over the copper action level.
The 2025 report nevertheless identifies three regulatory violations. The City reported that it did not complete all required monitoring under the Interim Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule during April 2025 and again during May 2025. It also reported a Lead and Copper Rule violation because it did not certify to the Illinois EPA that required annual notifications and information had been delivered to consumers with lead, galvanized-requiring-replacement, or lead-status-unknown service lines. The report lists that Lead and Copper Rule violation as running from July 15, 2025 through March 26, 2026. These were monitoring/reporting and notification issues; they should not be confused with a reported maximum-contaminant-level exceedance.
The 2025 report provides a regulatory measure of water clarity through turbidity testing. Chicago reported that 100% of applicable monthly samples met the ≤0.3 NTU turbidity benchmark, and the highest single measurement was 0.29 NTU. Both entries were reported as passing.
The report does not provide enough information to make broad claims about how Chicago tap water tastes or smells at individual homes and businesses. Those characteristics can vary, so no unsupported citywide taste or odor claim is made here.
