Chicago Lead Service Lines: How to Check if Your Home Has One

The quickest way to find out whether your Chicago home has a lead service line is to look up your address in the city’s Service Line Inventory, then confirm it by checking the pipe where water enters your basement and ordering a free lead test through 311. Chicago has an estimated 412,000 lead service lines, more than any other U.S. city, so if you live in an older building it is worth the 15 minutes.

Key Takeaways

  • Chicago required lead service lines in its plumbing code until lead pipes were banned nationally in 1986, so homes built before then are the most likely to have one.
  • The City of Chicago’s Service Line Inventory labels each address as Lead, Suspected Lead, Galvanized Requiring Replacement or Non-Lead. “Suspected Lead” usually means the material is unverified.
  • A key and a magnet are enough for a basic home check: a lead pipe is dull gray, scratches to shiny silver and does not attract a magnet.
  • Chicago offers free lead test kits through 311, and income-eligible homeowners may qualify for a free full replacement through the city’s Equity Lead Service Line Replacement Program.
  • Filtered or delivered water can cover drinking while a lead line is still in place, but neither one replaces the pipe.

What is a lead service line, and why does Chicago have so many?

A lead service line is the underground pipe that carries water from the city main under the street into your building. Part runs under the public way and part on your property, and the whole line counts as lead if any section is lead.

That is different from lead in household plumbing, such as old solder or brass fixtures, which can exist with or without a lead service line.

The reason Chicago has so many is simple: the city’s plumbing code required them until the 1986 federal ban. The city adds a phosphate to the water that coats the inside of lead pipes and reduces how much lead leaches out. Street work, main replacements and meter installations can disturb that coating, which is why the city’s advice centers on testing and flushing.

What tends to get overlooked is that a lead line does not mean lead at your tap every day. Between 2016 and 2022, Chicago tested water from more than 30,000 homes, and about 6% came back at or above the federal action level of 15 parts per billion, according to ABC7 Chicago’s reporting on the city’s data. You only know what your own tap is doing by testing it.

How to check if your Chicago home has a lead service line

If I were checking a Chicago address from scratch, I would do these four steps in order. All four are free.

1. Look up your address in the city’s inventory

The Chicago Department of Water Management publishes a Service Line Inventory that lists the known or presumed material for every service line in the city. Results fall into four categories:

  • Lead: at least one section of the line is known to be lead.
  • Suspected Lead: the material is unverified and presumed to be lead, usually because of the building’s age.
  • Galvanized Requiring Replacement: no lead is confirmed, but a galvanized steel section may have absorbed lead from pipe upstream.
  • Non-Lead: no section is lead or likely to be contaminated by it.

Two cautions: the inventory submitted to Illinois EPA in April 2025 will not show every later replacement, and larger buildings are sometimes listed under the nearest intersection.

2. Find where the water line enters your home

In most Chicago houses and two-flats, the service line comes through the basement wall facing the street and runs to a shutoff valve. Check the stretch between the wall and that valve.

3. Do the scratch and magnet test

Gently scrape the pipe with a key or coin (do not dig into it), then hold a refrigerator magnet against it.

Pipe materialColor before scratchingAfter a light scratchMagnet sticks?
LeadDull grayShiny silverNo
Galvanized steelDull grayStays dull grayYes
CopperBrown, like a pennyBright copperNo
PlasticWhite, black or blueNo changeNo

This only identifies the visible section. The pipe under your yard or parkway can be different, so copper in the basement does not rule out lead outside.

4. Test your water for free

Chicago provides free lead test kits. Request one online at chicagowaterquality.org or call 311, and the city arranges pickup of your samples. You can also request a technician visit through 311 (no water use for six hours beforehand, and someone must be home).

What to do if your home has a lead service line

The practical question is how to reduce exposure until the pipe is replaced. Chicago’s guidance comes down to three habits and one longer-term step.

  • Flush before you drink. If water has sat in the pipes for six hours or more, run the cold tap for at least five minutes before drinking or cooking.
  • Use cold water only. Drink and cook with cold tap water. Boiling does not remove lead.
  • Use a filter certified for lead. Look for the NSF mark and a label that specifically says the filter is certified to reduce lead. Some Chicago residents qualify for a free pitcher and six cartridges through the city’s filter program.
  • Look into replacement. Homeowners can check their options with the city’s eligibility questionnaire. Income-eligible homeowners may get a free full replacement through the Equity program, and homeowners who hire their own contractor may have up to $5,000 in permit fees waived. The city estimates a full replacement costs $16,000 to $35,000.

If you have young children, ask your pediatrician about a blood lead test, the only way to know whether a child has been exposed.

One thing I would not wait on is the replacement deadline. Chicago’s current plan runs to 2076, so for many households these habits will matter for years.

What if you rent?

Renters can do every check above except order the replacement. Look up the address, request a 311 test kit and share the results with your landlord, who decides on the pipe. Many leases rule out under-sink filters, leaving a pitcher, bottled water or delivery.

Where delivered water fits

The way I think about it, the pipe and your drinking water are two separate decisions. The pipe can take years. Your drinking water is something you can settle this week.

Verde Springs water does not pass through your building’s service line. It starts from carefully selected municipal sources and goes through activated carbon, reverse osmosis, UV treatment, fine filtration and ozone disinfection, with continuous monitoring. Verde Springs delivers it in reusable 3-gallon glass or 5-gallon plastic bottles, brought up to the unit, with no contract. You would still cook with tap water, so the flushing and filter advice still applies.
