According to the Village of Buffalo Grove's 2025 Water Quality Consumer Confidence Report, covering January 1 through December 31, 2025 and published July 1, 2026, all water delivered to Buffalo Grove by the Northwest Water Commission comes from Lake Michigan. The City of Evanston is the Commission's sole supplier of finished, treated water.
Evanston pumps the raw Lake Michigan water and provides conventional treatment consisting of mixing, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration. The Northwest Water Commission purchases the finished water at Evanston's treatment plant, transports it through a 60-inch transmission main to a 25-million-gallon reservoir, and then pumps it through its distribution system to Buffalo Grove's four receiving reservoirs.
The Village monitors chlorine levels at all four receiving stations and states that additional chlorine can be added when necessary to protect against microbial contaminants before the water enters Buffalo Grove's distribution system.
The Village also maintains emergency backup wells for use during supply interruptions. The CCR discusses those wells separately from Buffalo Grove's normal Lake Michigan supply.
The Village's current Water Quality webpage identifies its Consumer Confidence Report as the annual Water Quality Report required under the Safe Drinking Water Act and links to the 2025 report. (Buffalo Grove)
The CCR's tables report no violations for the regulated contaminants listed for Buffalo Grove's normal drinking-water supply during the applicable monitoring periods. For 2025, chlorine was reported at 0.9 ppm against an MRDL of 4 ppm; haloacetic acids (HAA5) were reported at 22 ppb against an MCL of 60 ppb; and total trihalomethanes (TTHM) were reported at 50 ppb against an MCL of 80 ppb. Each was marked “No” for violation.
For inorganic contaminants sampled by Evanston in 2025, the report lists fluoride at 0.77 ppm against a 4.0 ppm MCL, nitrate at 0.3 ppm against a 10 ppm MCL, and barium at 0.021 ppm against a 2 ppm MCL. Each is marked as having no violation. Sodium was also reported, although the CCR notes that no state or federal MCL has been established for sodium.
The latest lead and copper results included in the report are from August 2023, with the next test scheduled for summer 2026. Lead had a 90th-percentile result of less than 1.0 µg/L, compared with the 15 µg/L action level, with a sample range of less than 1.0 to 11 µg/L. Copper had a 90th-percentile result of 0.085 ppm, compared with a 1.3 ppm action level. Both entries are marked “No” for violation.
The report also includes a separate set of results for Buffalo Grove backup well sites. In the radioactive-contaminant table, combined radium 226/228 is reported at 12.84 pCi/L against a listed 5 pCi/L MCL, and gross alpha is reported at 39.1 pCi/L against a listed 15 pCi/L MCL. The report nevertheless marks both as “No” for violation and specifically states for gross alpha that results above the MCL are allowed because the source is a backup water supply. These results are therefore presented here exactly in the context supplied by the Village and should not be confused with Buffalo Grove's routine Lake Michigan supply.
Buffalo Grove's CCR specifically states that residents may notice changes in taste or odor during late summer or early fall. The Village explains that clearer Lake Michigan water allows sunlight to reach greater depths, which can increase algae growth. Certain algae can emit compounds called geosmin and 2-MIB, which the report describes as harmless but capable of producing a musty or earthy taste or odor. The City of Evanston's treatment facility continues to address these aesthetic issues.
The report also provides hardness information. For 2025, Buffalo Grove reports an average hardness of 148 mg/L as CaCO3, with a minimum result of 120 mg/L. The CCR does not characterize this value as a violation.
Turbidity, a measure of water cloudiness and an indicator of filtration effectiveness, had a highest single measurement of 0.15 NTU compared with a 1 NTU treatment-technique limit. The report states that 100% of measurements met the monthly 0.3 NTU limit and lists no turbidity violation. Total Organic Carbon removal requirements were also reported as having been met each month.
The Illinois EPA source-water assessment summarized in Buffalo Grove's report considers all surface-water community supplies susceptible to potential pollution. The CCR explains that Evanston's three Lake Michigan intakes are sufficiently far offshore that shoreline impacts are not considered a water-quality factor, but potential susceptibility remains because of the North Shore Channel, wet-weather flows, and proximity to a major shipping lane.
The report also contains required lead information explaining that lead in drinking water is primarily associated with service lines and home plumbing materials. Residents concerned about lead are advised to identify lead-containing plumbing materials, consider testing, and take the flushing and filtration precautions described by the Village. Buffalo Grove also maintains a service-line material inventory; the Village's Water Quality webpage links to both the inventory and a service-line map. (Buffalo Grove)
Important Note: The information above is based on publicly available Consumer Confidence Reports, municipal water-quality information, and other cited public sources available at the time of publication. According to the Village of Buffalo Grove's 2025 Water Quality Consumer Confidence Report, the regulated-contaminant tables for Buffalo Grove's normal Lake Michigan drinking-water supply report no violations for the parameters presented. The report separately contains monitoring information for emergency backup wells and unregulated contaminants. Water-quality conditions, treatment processes, testing results, and regulatory requirements may change over time. Residents seeking the most current information should consult the Village of Buffalo Grove or review the latest Consumer Confidence Report.

Buffalo Grove's routine municipal drinking water originates in Lake Michigan, is treated by the City of Evanston, and is delivered through the Northwest Water Commission. The Village's 2025 report lists no violations for the regulated parameters presented for the community's normal Lake Michigan supply. The report also documents local considerations including seasonal earthy or musty taste and odor, an average hardness measurement of 148 mg/L as CaCO3, service-line and household-plumbing considerations related to lead, and several PFAS detections.
The report separately presents monitoring results for Buffalo Grove's emergency backup wells. Those data should not be interpreted as measurements of the Lake Michigan water routinely supplied to customers.
